The Stories

1. Nick Vujicic: The Man With No Limbs, No Limits

Nick Vujicic, born in the year 1982. As a child growing up in Melbourne, Australia, he faced relentless bullying, deep depression, and attempted to take his own life at just 10 years old. He could not understand why God had allowed him to come into the world in such a condition.

But Nick chose perseverance over bitterness. He completed a double degree in financial planning and accounting, learned to surf, paint, play golf, and swim. Today, he travels the world speaking to millions of people across 70+ countries, and is the founder of Life Without Limbs, an international non-profit organization.

“My strength and my hope are not in my circumstances, but in Jesus Christ.”-Nick Vujicic

2. Oprah Winfrey born in the year 1954. Oprah Winfrey was born into extreme poverty in rural Mississippi. She was raised by a single teenage mother, experienced sexual abuse at age 9, gave birth to a premature baby at 14 (who died shortly after), and was told by early career producers that she was ‘unfit for television.’

She persevered. She launched The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1986 and it became the highest-rated talk show in American television history, running for 25 years. Today, Oprah is worth over $2.5 billion and has used her platform to transform millions of lives through education, media, and philanthropy.

3. Thomas Edison born in the year 1847–1931. Thomas Edison was told by his teachers that he was ‘too stupid to learn anything.’ He was fired from his first two jobs for being unproductive. When he set out to invent the electric lightbulb, he reportedly failed over 10,000 times before succeeding.

Rather than calling these attempts failures, Edison is famously quoted as saying: ‘I have not failed 10,000 times. I have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.’ His lightbulb invention in 1879 forever changed human civilization, and he holds over 1,000 patents to his name.

4. J.K. Rowling born in the year, 1965, in England. Before Harry Potter became a global phenomenon, J.K. Rowling was a single mother living on government welfare benefits in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was clinically depressed, recently divorced, and struggling to care for her infant daughter. She described herself as ‘the biggest failure I knew.’

She wrote the first Harry Potter manuscript in cafes during her daughter’s naps, and the book was rejected by 12 different publishers before Bloomsbury finally accepted it in 1997. Today, the Harry Potter series has sold over 500 million copies worldwide, been translated into 80 languages, and spawned one of the highest-grossing film franchises in history.

5. Abraham Lincoln born in the year, 1809–1865. Abraham Lincoln’s life story is a textbook definition of perseverance. He was born into poverty, lost his mother at age 9, failed in business twice, suffered a nervous breakdown, and lost eight different political elections, including races for the state legislature, Congress, and the U.S. Senate, before finally being elected as the 16th President of the United States in 1860.

During his presidency, he led the nation through the American Civil War and signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which abolished slavery in the Confederate states. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in American history.

6. Bethany Hamilton, born in the year 1990, Hawaii, USA. On October 31, 2003, 13-year-old surfing prodigy Bethany Hamilton was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing off the coast of Hawaii. The attack severed her left arm. Doctors were unsure she would survive. She lost 60% of her blood.

But Bethany had a dream and a faith that was stronger than her tragedy. Just one month after the attack, she was back in the water. By 2005, she had won her first national surfing title. She went on to compete professionally on the World Surf League, place top rankings in international competitions, and inspire millions through her best-selling memoir and the Hollywood film Soul Surfer (2011).

“Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you.” – Bethany Hamilton

7. Albert Einstein, born in the year 1879–1955, Germany/USA. Albert Einstein did not speak until he was 4 years old and could not read until age 7. His teachers described him as ‘mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams.’ He failed his university entrance exam on the first attempt. He was rejected for a teaching position and could not find an academic job, eventually taking a clerk position at a patent office.

From that patent office, Einstein developed the Theory of Special Relativity (1905) and later the Theory of General Relativity – arguably the most profound scientific insights in modern history. In 1921, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. His name became synonymous with genius itself.

8. Wilma Rudolph, born in the year 1940–1994, Tennessee, USA. Wilma Rudolph was the 20th of 22 children, born prematurely and weighing just 4.5 pounds. By age 4, she had survived double pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio, the last of which left her left leg paralyzed. Doctors said she would never walk.

Wilma’s devout Christian mother refused to accept that verdict. She took Wilma to a Black medical college 50 miles away every week for treatment for years. Wilma wore a metal brace on her leg but refused to let it define her. By age 12, she had removed the brace permanently. By 16, she was competing in the Olympics.

At the 1960 Rome Olympics, Wilma Rudolph became the fastest woman in the world, winning three gold medals in sprint events. She became an international icon and was called ‘the black pearl’ across Europe.

“My doctor told me I would never walk. My mother told me I would. I believed my mother.” – Wilma Rudolph

9. Steve Jobs was born in the year, 1955–2011, California, USA. Steve Jobs co-founded Apple Inc. in 1976 in a garage at the age of 21. But in 1985, at just 30 years old, he was publicly ousted from the very company he had built. The board he had assembled voted to strip him of his leadership role. It was a humiliation that devastated him.

Rather than disappearing, Jobs founded a new computer company called NeXT and acquired a small animation studio called Pixar. Pixar went on to produce Toy Story (1995), the first fully computer-animated film, and became one of the most successful animation studios of all time.

In 1997, Apple acquired NeXT, and Jobs returned to lead the company he had been exiled from. Over the next 14 years, he launched the iMac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, and iPad- products that fundamentally changed communication, music, film, and technology worldwide. Apple became the world’s most valuable company under his restored leadership.

10. Fanny Crosby, was born in the 1820–1915, New York, USA. Frances Jane Crosby, known as Fanny Crosby, became permanently blind at just six weeks old due to a medical error. In the 1800s, a blind woman had almost no opportunity for education, employment, or public life. Yet Fanny refused to be defined by her disability.

She went on to write over 9,000 hymns, making her the most prolific hymn writer in Christian history. Songs like ‘Blessed Assurance,’ ‘To God Be the Glory,’ ‘Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior,’ and ‘Rescue the Perishing’ have been sung in churches worldwide for over 150 years and remain beloved today.

When a minister once expressed pity for her blindness, Fanny replied: ‘You know that I am happy. And if I were to make a wish, I think I would wish to remain blind. For the first face I will ever see will be the face of my Lord Jesus Christ.

7 POWERFUL LESSONS ON PERSEVERANCE FROM THESE 10 LIVES

1. Pain is not permanent. Every season of suffering has an expiry date. You will not stay in valley forever.

2. Ordinary is not a limitation. God has never needed extraordinary people. He needs willing ones.

3. Failure is a teacher. Edison, Lincoln, and Jobs all failed massively and became legends. Failure is tuition.

4. Your story is still being written. You are not at the end. The best chapters may be yet to come.

5. Faith fuels perseverance. Every person on this list had an inner anchor a belief that kept them going against all evidence.

6. Community matters. Wilma Rudolph had her mother. You need people who carry your vision when you cannot.

7. The world needs your breakthrough. Your perseverance is not just for you. Someone else’s life will be changed because you did not quit.

CONCLUSION: YOUR TURN TO PERSEVERE

Every person profiled in this blog post was, at some point, considered a failure, a nobody, or a lost cause. None of them had special powers or divine shortcuts. What they had was a refusal to stop, a stubborn, irreducible faith that the next chapter would be better than the current one.

That same faith is available to you. Your situation may be hard today — the job rejection, the broken relationship, the financial pressure, the health diagnosis, the ministry that is not growing as fast as you hoped. But you are not ordinary in the way the world defines ordinary. You are a child of God, called and equipped for a purpose that is still unfolding.

Do not give up. Keep going. History is full of people who almost quit and we are grateful they did not. One day, your perseverance story will inspire someone else to keep going too.
