Saul was passionate about his Jewish faith, and he saw the followers of Jesus as dangerous heretics who needed to be stopped. He approved of the stoning of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, and actively pursued Christians to imprison and even kill them (Acts 8:1-3).
The Damascus Road Encounter
Everything changed on the road to Damascus. Saul was on his way to arrest more Christians when suddenly a blinding light from heaven surrounded him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying: “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9:4).
When Saul asked who was speaking, the answer came: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” In that single moment, the greatest persecutor of the church became its greatest champion. Saul was blinded for three days, fasted, and prayed until God sent a man named Ananias to restore his sight and baptize him.
The Transformation of Paul
After his conversion, Saul now known as Paul did not waste a moment. He immediately began preaching in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God (Acts 9:20). People were astonished. This was the same man who had been arresting Christians just days before.
Paul spent time in Arabia for three years, where God prepared and equipped him for ministry. When he returned, he was a different man, fully surrendered to Christ and ready to fulfill his divine assignment.
Paul’s Missionary Journeys
Paul undertook three major missionary journeys, traveling thousands of miles by foot, boat, and on horseback across Asia Minor, Greece, and eventually to Rome. He planted churches in cities like Ephesus, Corinth, Philippi, Thessalonica, and Galatia.
Everywhere Paul went, he preached the same message; salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone. He performed miracles, cast out demons, and raised the dead. But he also faced incredible oppositions; he was beaten, stoned, imprisoned, shipwrecked, and left for dead multiple times.
Paul’s Letters – Our Inheritance
One of Paul’s greatest contributions to the faith is his letters. Thirteen of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament are attributed to Paul, including Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and more. These letters contain some of the deepest theological truths ever written and continue to transform lives thousands of years later.
Paul’s Death and Legacy
Paul was eventually arrested and taken to Rome, where he was imprisoned. Tradition holds that he was martyred under the Roman Emperor Nero around 67 AD, dying for the very faith he once tried to destroy. Yet his death was not the end – his letters and his example continue to preach to billions.
