On October 31, 2003, 13-year-old surfing prodigy Bethany Hamilton was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing off the coast of Hawaii. The attack severed her left arm. Doctors were unsure she would survive. She lost 60% of her blood.

#8 Wilma Rudolph
(1940–1994, Tennessee, USA) Key Lesson: Physical weakness is no match for iron will
8. Wilma Rudolph- From Paralysis to Podium
Wilma Rudolph was the 20th of 22 children, born prematurely and weighing just 4.5 pounds. By age 4, she had survived double pneumonia, scarlet fever, and polio- the last of which left her left leg paralyzed. Doctors said she would never walk.
Wilma’s devout Christian mother refused to accept that verdict. She took Wilma to a Black medical college 50 miles away every week for treatment for years. Wilma wore a metal brace on her leg but refused to let it define her. By age 12, she had removed the brace permanently. By 16, she was competing in the Olympics.
At the 1960 Rome Olympics, Wilma Rudolph became the fastest woman in the world, winning three gold medals in sprint events. She became an international icon and was called ‘the black pearl’ across Europe.
Perseverance Lesson: A mother’s faith and a child’s will are unstoppable forces. Surround yourself with people who believe in what God has placed inside of you- even when you cannot yet see it yourself.

9. Steve Jobs- Fired, Returned, and Changed the World
Steve Jobs co-founded Apple Inc. in 1976 in a garage at the age of 21. But in 1985, at just 30 years old, he was publicly ousted from the very company he had built. The board he had assembled voted to strip him of his leadership role. It was a humiliation that devastated him.
Rather than disappearing, Jobs founded a new computer company called NeXT and acquired a small animation studio called Pixar. Pixar went on to produce Toy Story (1995), the first fully computer-animated film, and became one of the most successful animation studios of all time.
In 1997, Apple acquired NeXT, and Jobs returned to lead the company he had been exiled from. Over the next 14 years, he launched the iMac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, and iPad- products that fundamentally changed communication, music, film, and technology worldwide. Apple became the world’s most valuable company under his restored leadership.
Perseverance Lesson: Being removed from a position does not mean being removed from your purpose. Sometimes God has to close one door so that He can open a greater one.

(1820–1915, New York, USA) Key Lesson: Blindness of the eyes cannot blind the soul
10. Fanny Crosby- Blind Eyes, Brilliant Hymns
Frances Jane Crosby- known as Fanny Crosby; became permanently blind at just six weeks old due to a medical error. In the 1800s, a blind woman had almost no opportunity for education, employment, or public life. Yet Fanny refused to be defined by her disability.
She went on to write over 9,000 hymns- making her the most prolific hymn writer in Christian history. Songs like ‘Blessed Assurance,’ ‘To God Be the Glory,’ ‘Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior,’ and ‘Rescue the Perishing’ have been sung in churches worldwide for over 150 years and remain beloved today.
When a minister once expressed pity for her blindness, Fanny replied: ‘You know that I am happy! And if I were to make a wish, I think I would wish to remain blind. For the first face I will ever see will be the face of my Lord Jesus Christ.’

The Bible is the greatest perseverance manual ever written. Romans 5:3-4 says: ‘We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.’ This is God’s divine process; He never wastes a trial.
James 1:2-4 adds: ‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.’
